This is an animation that I created for my individual project in the Motion Design course at Hyper Island. It is the continuation of a research project I developed during another course “Introduction to Contemporary Arts and Politics”, at the University of Gothenburg. The script is based on material from this old project.
The Coconut Breakers are a group of Brazilian women whose lives depend on babassu coconuts. I wanted to show a little of their history through their own voice. Thus, the script was entirely built on phrases that I collected from different interviews and documentaries about them.
The Design
I chose a design style inspired by Cordel Xylography. This style creates a certain familiarity with the origins of the characters in the video since it is closely linked to cordel literature, very common in the north and northeast of Brazil. So, I wanted to bring to the viewer not only the story of the Quebradeiras but to tell it through a style that came from their region.
